View Patient InformationAmlodipine is a medicine that belongs to a group of drugs known as calcium channel blockers (calcium antagonists). It is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and angina — a type of chest pain caused by reduced blood flow to the heart.
Amlodipine prevents calcium from entering the muscle cells of the heart and blood vessels. This helps to relax and widen the blood vessels, lowering blood pressure and improving the flow of oxygen to the heart.
Amlodipine is available as tablets in 5mg or 10mg strengths, or as an oral liquid containing 1mg of amlodipine per ml.
Amlodipine is a prescription-only medicine, so it’s important to take it exactly as directed by your doctor and follow the instructions in the patient information leaflet provided.
You may take it before or after food.
Try to take it at the same time each day to help you remember.
Avoid grapefruit juice, as it can affect how Amlodipine works in your body.
Most people take Amlodipine without problems, but like all medicines, it can cause side effects in some individuals.
These are usually mild and tend to improve as your body adjusts to the medication.
Common side effects may include:
Swelling (fluid retention), especially in the ankles or feet.
Headaches, dizziness, or drowsiness.
Flushing or a sensation of warmth.
Heart palpitations (awareness of your heartbeat).
Digestive issues, such as stomach pain, nausea, constipation, diarrhoea, or indigestion.
Tiredness, weakness, or muscle cramps.
Changes in vision, such as blurred or double vision.
