View Patient InformationAllopurinol is an effective treatment for preventing gout attacks, but it should not be started or relied upon during an active gout attack, as it may prolong symptoms.
If you are already taking Allopurinol and experience a gout flare-up, you should continue your regular dose and manage the symptoms with other recommended treatments such as NSAIDs or colchicine, as advised by your doctor.
Allopurinol is a prescription medication used to lower high levels of uric acid in the blood. When uric acid builds up, it can form sharp crystals around the joints, leading to gout - a painful condition characterised by redness, swelling, and severe joint pain.
Allopurinol is commonly prescribed to prevent gout flare-ups and reduce the risk of complications such as kidney stones.
It is also known by the brand names Zyloric and Uricto.
Allopurinol works by inhibiting the production of uric acid in the body. This helps maintain normal uric acid levels in the blood, preventing crystal formation and reducing the likelihood of gout attacks.
It is available in 100mg and 300mg tablets and can only be obtained with a prescription.
When using Allopurinol, avoid taking certain medications unless advised by your doctor, as they may interact with it. These include:
Antibiotics
Aspirin
Immunosuppressants
Diuretics (e.g. furosemide)
ACE inhibitors (e.g. enalapril or ramipril)
Always consult your doctor or pharmacist before starting, stopping, or combining Allopurinol with other medications to ensure safe and effective treatment.
